Teaching Ethnography
Take a look at this post on ethnography published in Correspondences, “a structured, playful, four-way conversation that facilitates conversation between scholars across generational and geographic borders” curated by my friend Tiana Bakić-Hayden for Cultural Anthropology online. You can check out all four conversations about ethnography here. This “Provocation” makes a particularly strong point about the reluctance of anthropologists to teach ethnographic method – the point that I emphasize when I try to explain what our Fieldschool is about. We ARE trying to teach ethnographic fieldwork without denying that it is an art (or a craft) that could never be fully specified and made into a recipe.
